For most of us in the United States, being dependent on working animals is part of history. But around the world, 100 million working horses, donkeys, and mules are still indispensable to daily life – and even survival. These dedicated animals are doing the hardest jobs in the toughest environments to keep 600 million people out of desperate poverty.
From the brick kilns of Nepal, the slate mines of India, and the coal mines of Pakistan to the small farms of Ethiopia and Nicaragua, millions of horses, donkeys, and mules suffer terribly from chronic malnourishment, dehydration, exhaustion, disease, crippling injuries and lameness in their labor for mankind. But it doesn’t have to be this way!
Brooke USA’s mission is to significantly improve the welfare of horses, donkeys and mules and the people they serve throughout Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America by raising funds and responsibly directing them to the areas of greatest need. Located in Lexington, Kentucky, Brooke USA is a sister charity of Brooke, the world’s largest international equine welfare charity. For more than 80 years, Brooke has improved the welfare of working equines through scientifically proven, practical, sustainable programs that provide a better quality of life for these crucial animals, which in turn ensures a more dependable livelihood for many of the world’s poorest families.
Funded by Brooke USA donors, Brooke veterinary teams provide animal owners and service providers with the skills and knowledge that they need to take better care of the animals on whom they depend. By investing in entire communities in the developing world, Brooke training improves the quality of life for animals in this generation and for generations to come.
